Amritsar is a holy city in the state of Punjab, India. Its name is derived from the sacred pool surrounding the Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib), meaning the “holy pool of nectar”. It is the spiritual and cultural center of Sikhism, and Sikhs are rightfully proud of their beautiful and unique Gurdwara.

Amritsar is an important seat of Sikh history and culture. Being the gateway for travelers entering India via the overland route from Central Asia, it developed as a major commercial hub. The city is home to many historical and religious sites.

The most famous attraction is the Golden Temple, founded by the fourth Sikh Guru, Guru Ram Das, and completed by Guru Arjan Dev. Other important sites include the Durgiana Temple, Ram Bagh Museum, Jallianwala Bagh, Gobindgarh Fort, and the sacred Tarn Taran tank located 25 km south of Amritsar.

Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib)

The Golden Temple is the holiest shrine of Sikhism and a major pilgrimage destination for Sikhs worldwide. It is also one of the most visited tourist attractions in India.

The temple is alive with spiritual energy and welcomes visitors of all faiths. Beyond its architectural beauty, the spiritual significance of the Golden Temple leaves a lasting impression on every visitor.

Jallianwala Bagh

Jallianwala Bagh holds a tragic place in Indian history. In 1919, British General Reginald Dyer ordered troops to fire upon innocent men, women, and children gathered here on Baisakhi.

The site still bears bullet marks and a well where people jumped to escape the firing. It stands as a powerful symbol of sacrifice and the struggle for India’s freedom.

Durgiana Temple

Situated outside Lohgarh Gate, the Durgiana Temple is a prominent Hindu shrine dedicated to Goddess Durga. The temple is built in the architectural style of the Golden Temple.

Located close to the Golden Temple complex, it attracts devotees, saints, and scholars from across India.

Indo–Pak Wagah Border

The Wagah Border is located about 28 km from Amritsar and is the only road border crossing between India and Pakistan.

Tourists can visit the border via special buses and taxis from Amritsar. The daily retreat ceremony, patriotic atmosphere, and panoramic views make it a must-visit attraction.

Mata Lal Devi Temple (Model Town)

Mata Lal Devi Temple is one of the most popular Hindu pilgrimage sites in Punjab. Located in the Rani Ka Bagh area, it is built on the lines of the Vaishno Devi Temple of Katra.

The temple attracts thousands of devotees every year, especially during festivals, and is located close to the Amritsar Railway Station.

Maharaja Ranjit Singh Panorama (Ram Bagh)

Ram Bagh is a beautiful garden named in honor of Guru Ram Das, the founder of Amritsar. It houses the summer palace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, now converted into a museum.

The museum displays weapons from Mughal times, portraits of Punjab’s ruling houses, and a replica of the Kohinoor diamond. A statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh on horseback stands as a tribute to his valor. The museum remains closed on Wednesdays.
